Not All Hyaluroinic Acid Is Created Equal
First things first, what is Hyaluronic Acid? Not only is it a super trendy ingredient right now in pretty much all skincare lines, but it is also a natural occurring ingredient in our bodies. It is a clear, gel substance thats purpose is to hold moisture in our skin cells like a humectant. It is basically what gives our skin its hydrated, plump, healthy appearance. So, what do we do with something that is proven by science to keep us looking youthful? Add more of it topically, inject it, and take it orally of course.
The name can be a little confusing. We typically think of an acid being exfoliating, irritating, and not something to use on sensitive or damaged skin. Hyaluronic Acid however is a neutral acid, non-irritating or exfoliating, and can be used on wounds to heal faster.
Now that Hyaluronic Acid is so mainstream we see it popping up on every label. The problem with this is, not all Hyaluronic Acids are created equal. Skin at Peace is formulated by a Chemist + Medical Doctor, so extensive research was done before choosing which Hyaluronic Acid would work best on skin. We found that a high molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid is the one that actually turns off the signal to cause inflammation, along with potent hydration qualities. Using low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid actually mimics a receptor in your immune system that activates, or turns on inflammation, causing redness and irritation! Unfortunately, most manufacturers of cosmetics and skincare are not aware of this. Low molecular weight HA is less expensive and more abundant, therefore used in many products.
Until companies are all completely transparent about what exactly each ingredient consists of and where it came from, there really isn’t a way to find out which molecular weight they are using for their Hyaluronic Acid. Skin at Peace is happy to provide any further information on this, or any subject, to better inform the public of our choice of ingredients. Only the highest molecular weight, and quality Hyaluronic Acid is used in all of our products, to not only calm inflammation, but turn it off.
